New Vernon F. Gallagher Chair for the Integration of Science, Philosophy, Theology and Law Appointed

Dr. Gerard Magill has been named the second holder of the Vernon F. Gallagher Chair for the Integration of Science, Theology, Philosophy and Law at Duquesne University effective July 1.

A professor for the Center of Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University, Magill served as the Center’s inaugural department chair from 1996-2005 and subsequently served as the Center’s executive director from 1999-2005.  He also holds faculty appointments in the College of Arts and Sciences (theology), School of Medicine (internal medicine) and the School of Public Health (health administration) at Saint Louis University.

As the Gallagher Chair, Magill will work primarily in the areas of health care ethics/bioethics, focusing on research and publishing.  He will serve as a faculty member of the health care ethics program in the McAnulty Graduate School of Liberal Arts, teaching and mentoring doctoral students and serving on the examination boards.  He will report to the dean of the McAnulty College and Graduate School.

Magill began at Saint Louis University as an assistant professor of theology in 1988. He also serves on the University’s Hospital Ethics Committee, is a member of the Institutional Review Board for research protocols and was the lead author of Ethics Consultation Liability, a national report commissioned by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. Magill also held teaching posts at Loyola University’s theology department in Chicago and at Drygrange College’s seminary in Scotland. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from Edinburgh University, Scotland, and an S.T.L. in moral theology, an S.T.B. in systematic theology and a Ph.B. in philosophy from Gregorian University, Rome.

Dr. David Kelly, a professor of theology and health care ethics at Duquesne University, previously held the Gallagher Chair post.  The endowed chair is named for Gallagher, who served as Duquesne’s eighth president from 1950-59, and was funded through the estate of the late Dr. Bernard J. Ransil, a 1951 graduate of the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.
