Duquesne Reading Clinic Receives Boost from Verizon

January 18, 2007

A $10,000 grant received today from the Verizon Foundation will be used to help young readers finesse literacy skills through the Duquesne University Reading Clinic.

The grant will support the Reading Clinic, which helps about 225 students in the region every year to improve their reading skills. Districts participating in this component of the clinic, which operates on Saturdays and during the summer, include McKeesport, Peters Township, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Quaker Valley and Woodland Hills, as well as Vincentian Academy.

“Through this program, and with Verizon’s help, students discover how a book can be more than words on a page,” said Dr. Rose Mary Mautino, director of the Reading Clinic.

“On behalf of Verizon, we applaud the University in its innovative programs and commitment to education,” said Susan Kanonczyk, director of external affairs for Verizon Pennsylvania. “Verizon believes in supporting programs, such as the Reading Clinic’s team-taught approach, which helps people gain the complex literacy skills needed across the lifespan, from early childhood through adulthood, to participate and compete in the 21st century.”

Using the expertise of reading specialists, arts and theater production teachers, this reading clinic program reaches fourth- through seventh-graders who learn to bring the ideas presented on the page to life by drawing scenes from their books, seeing others draw, acting out portions of the book, and through other dramatic, artistic and sensory presentations, Mautino said.

The clinic has served southwestern Pennsylvania since 1969. To refer children ages 7 to 17 to the clinic for diagnostic evaluation or tutorial assistance, call 412.396.6088.
