| Duquesne University
has named Benjamin Levine as the grand prize winner
of the 2005 Mind, Heart and Spirit Award, which
acknowledges and promotes outstanding student
athletes from local high schools.
Levine, who has been awarded a four-year, $26,000
Duquesne University scholarship, received on-field
recognition and was presented with a commemorative
award plaque as well as a letter from Pittsburgh
Steelers President Art Rooney II at the Jan. 1
Steelers home game. He was selected as the grand-prize
winner from among seven outstanding local high
school seniors who received Mind, Heart and Spirit
finalist awards throughout the Steelers season.
In total, more than 120 area students were nominated
for the award this year.
A senior from Taylor Allderdice High School,
Levine is recognized for exuding sportsmanship
on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
He maintains a 4.38 grade point average with highest
honors and is also captain of the soccer and lacrosse
teams.
A member of the Allderdice school leadership
club and the Allderdice mock trial team, Levine
is an editor and editorial cartoonist for the
high school’s newspaper. The Pennsylvania
School Press Association has awarded him four
gold awards and one silver award for journalism
and cartooning pieces. In addition, he has volunteered
with Family Care Connections, where he worked
as a math and reading tutor with economically
disadvantaged children.
Levine is the son of Roseanne and Clifford Levine
of Squirrel Hill.
The Mind, Heart and Spirit Award finalists were
honored with game tickets and Jumbotron recognition
at each of the Steelers home games at Heinz Field
this past season. The honorees also received prizes
provided by Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh
Steelers Radio Network.
