Jan. 12, 2006

Duquesne University has named Benjamin Levine as the grand prize winner of the 2005 Mind, Heart and Spirit Award, which acknowledges and promotes outstanding student athletes from local high schools.

Levine, who has been awarded a four-year, $26,000 Duquesne University scholarship, received on-field recognition and was presented with a commemorative award plaque as well as a letter from Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II at the Jan. 1 Steelers home game. He was selected as the grand-prize winner from among seven outstanding local high school seniors who received Mind, Heart and Spirit finalist awards throughout the Steelers season. In total, more than 120 area students were nominated for the award this year.

A senior from Taylor Allderdice High School, Levine is recognized for exuding sportsmanship on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He maintains a 4.38 grade point average with highest honors and is also captain of the soccer and lacrosse teams.

A member of the Allderdice school leadership club and the Allderdice mock trial team, Levine is an editor and editorial cartoonist for the high school’s newspaper. The Pennsylvania School Press Association has awarded him four gold awards and one silver award for journalism and cartooning pieces. In addition, he has volunteered with Family Care Connections, where he worked as a math and reading tutor with economically disadvantaged children.

Levine is the son of Roseanne and Clifford Levine of Squirrel Hill.

The Mind, Heart and Spirit Award finalists were honored with game tickets and Jumbotron recognition at each of the Steelers home games at Heinz Field this past season. The honorees also received prizes provided by Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network.

The Mind, Heart and Spirit Award is sponsored by Duquesne University, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network.
