Duquesne University
President Dr. Charles Dougherty today announced
that the University will accept students displaced
by Hurricane Katrina, especially those from Loyola
University and Xavier University, the major Catholic
higher education institutions in New Orleans.
“We have all been shocked and saddened
by the loss of life, suffering, and catastrophic
damage on the Gulf Coast. Our prayers go out to
all those who have lost so much,” said Dougherty.
“It is our hope that by offering displaced
students a way to continue to pursue their degrees
without interruption, we can ease at least one
burden during this challenging time.”
Duquesne’s residence life staff, admissions
team, and academic units are prepared to assist
students in this outreach effort. Interested students
may call the Office of Admissions at 1-800-456-0590
or 412-396-6221 for further information.
In addition, Duquesne is collecting financial
donations to support the Uptown District of New
Orleans, where the Spiritans—the University’s
founding fathers—have led an active ministry
through the Holy Ghost Church on Louisiana Avenue.
“Since 1915, the Spiritan Congregation
has tirelessly provided social services and other
assistance to people of all faiths in the Uptown
area of New Orleans,” said the Rev. Tim
Hickey, C.S.Sp., vice chair of the Duquesne University
Corporation. “We will continue to support
them through this tragic situation.”
All donations will directly aid residents in
the Holy Ghost Church neighborhood, regardless
of religious affiliation. Checks made payable
to The Spiritans may be sent to:
