U.S. Representative Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania’s 14th Congressional District (Pittsburgh) will give the keynote address “America, the United Nations and the War in Iraq,” at the opening ceremony of the Duquesne University Model United Nations Council. The event is free and open to the public.
The Duquesne University Model United Nations is an annual simulation/competition for area high school students. Organized and hosted by Duquesne’s United Nations Council, more than 400 students are attending the event from 28 high schools, including Carlynton, Mt. Lebanon and Yough High Schools and Vincentian Academy-Duquesne University.
The students will represent pre-assigned nations in simulations of actual United Nations committees. This year’s committees include the U.N. Population Fund, the First Committee of the General Assembly—Disarmament and International Security, the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly—Legal, the U.N. Environmental Program, the Special Session of Children and the U.N. Security Council. Awards and scholarships to Duquesne University will be presented to the best participants at the competition.
